Deep beneath the surface, layers of solid rock sink lower and lower into the crust. The immense weight of the entire earth above bears down, squeezing every mineral grain tightly together. Temperatures steadily climb, and glowing seams of heat begin to spread through the stone as relentless pressure builds far below the ground. Under this crushing heat and pressure, the rock never melts, but it slowly changes. Mineral grains realign, flatten, and recrystallize into dense new bands. What was once ordinary stone is reborn as metamorphic rock, transformed entirely by the forces deep within the earth.
